When a user bought a game on Steam, the executable ( .exe ) was encrypted. Upon launch, the Steam client decrypted the file into memory, verified ownership via the user's account, and then allowed the process to run. From a reverse-engineering perspective, this meant that if one could obtain the decrypted executable from memory (a process known as "dumping"), the primary layer of protection was stripped away.
