In the 1970s, Turkey was bleeding. Political violence between leftists and nationalists filled the streets. Millions migrated from rural villages to the sprawling slums—the gecekondu (meaning "built overnight")—surrounding Ankara and Istanbul. These people were homesick. They were poor. They were angry.
